Eating Disorder Statistics- What Do They Say?
|
Eating disorders have affected a large population around the world. If you look at the alarming eating disorder statistics you would realize the sorry state many people find themselves in. According to Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, Inc. the number of people affected from various types of eating disorders is increasing very fast. According to a research, the largest number of affected sufferers is for anorexia nervosa, binge eating and bulimia nervosa. It also states that about one percent of female adolescents suffer from anorexia between the age of ten and twenty while they are starving themselves to look slim. Although the figures for children younger than teens and older adults are not very large, they are also quite intimidating. The statistics present bulimia nervosa as another potentially dangerous ailment. An approximate four percent i.e. four out of every hundred, college-aged women have bulimia. Another startling revelation is that about 50 % of people known to be anorexic, develop bulimia gradually. There are no statistics for older people as people with bulimia are known to be secretive about their ailment. Also, the problem of bulimia is rare in children. Males comprises of 10 percent of the whole population affected by anorexia and bulimia. According to researchers at Harvard University Medical School, the males comprise of a 25 percent of the total number of adults with eating disorders. The results are based on a survey of 9,000 adults across the U.S. The survey is named National Comorbidity Survey Replication. Also, the statistics place people in teens and twenties to be mostly affected by anorexia and bulimia. Also, sixty percent of adult male and female Americans are found to be overweight. Many of these adults are affected by a binge eating disorder. Approximately, 28 percent of American boys and 31 percent of American teenage girls are found to be overweight. Nearly 14 percent of teen boys and 15 percent of teen girls are obese. The eating disorder statistics also state that almost 20 percent of the patients die without treatment. The percentage of people who die despite getting the right treatment is just two to three percent. In a nutshell, all the above mentioned eating disorder statistics issue a warning. If the statistics stay on a rise then they are sure to be fatal and become a cause of major catastrophe around the world. |
