Teen Eating Disorders: What To Look For

In the fast lifestyles of today, eating disorders are common among all of us. Teenagers especially are easy prey to this problem. Two common teen eating disorders are Anorexia and Bulimia (binge eating). Teens suffering from such disorders could be suffering from other problems as well. These problems include stress, emotional upheaval and biological or genetic factors. In this article we will discuss some of the causes of eating disorders in kids and how different types of eating troubles affect them. Usually young people fall pray to such problems when trying to cope with some big problem in their personal life. The problem becomes too big for a teenager to handle. For instance, the death of some one in the family or the loss of someone close to the child would be too burdensome for a young mind to bear. Sometimes separation of parents or their divorce could also become a reason for kid's ill health. In some cases it is also found that a teen suffering from depression and low self-esteem develops eating disorders. He/she may also feel that the things are getting out of his/her control. They start eating improperly as they feel that it provides a vent to their gloom and frustrations. Usually people think that a lazy teenager must suffer from a teen eating disorder. However a typical teenager who suffers from such a problem is bright, hard working and energetic. The common eating disorder Anorexia Nervosa normally affects teens in the age group of 10-20 years. Most of them are girls. And 75 percent of its patients are never found to be overweight. Another typical teen eating disorder is Bulimia Nervosa. This problem typically affects girls in their late teenage years. 10 percent of all the women are found to be affected by this particular eating disorder in their young age. Also they were either obese or overweight during that time. One should never take the condition lightly. If observed in any of the teens around you, you should make an effort to take him to a good eating disorder clinic and get him diagnosed. Usually eating disorder could be a symptom of some other major problem in a child. A lack of proper treatment can further worsen his condition. So it becomes very important for you as a parent to find out more about the symptoms shown by your kids and identify them as soon as possible. Being well aware about the teen eating disorder would help you take most appropriate actions against any unforeseen maladies whenever required. |
